Thanks to our cutting-edge dental treatment, Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), you can. With GBT, you can say goodbye to traditional teeth cleaning methods and embrace a safer, more efficient and personalised approach to oral wellbeing. Read on to discover the eight steps of GBT.
What is biofilm, and why is it important to remove?
Plaque is free-floating bacteria which can be easily removed with light brushing. Biofilm, on the other hand, is made up of microorganisms, including bacteria, which stick to the surfaces in the mouth and are much more difficult to remove.
Biofilm accumulates on teeth and gum surfaces, leading to various oral issues such as:
- Cavities
- Gum disease
- Bad breath
If left untreated, biofilm can contribute to systemic health concerns as well as oral infections, which have been linked to:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Other systemic conditions
The eight steps of GBT
Guided Biofilm Therapy goes beyond the basic teeth cleaning treatment you receive at a general check-up, as it uses advanced technology to target biofilm in the entire mouth.
Here’s a quick explanation of the advanced 8-step GBT process:
Step one – Examination
First, we do a comprehensive examination of your teeth, gums and other areas to check for signs of disease and assess your oral health needs. This allows us to customise the treatment to target your specific issues or trouble areas.
Step two – Disclose
In order for us to treat the biofilm, we then need to apply a special solution to disclose and stain areas of biofilm buildup. Using the solution makes even tiny areas of plaque visible, thus allowing us to see and remove them.
Step three – Motivate
After your examination, we’ll provide you with instructions for daily oral hygiene techniques, such as brushing and flossing. By maintaining effective oral hygiene techniques, you’ll benefit from the amazing results from GBT at home.
Step four – Airflow
Next, we’ll remove your biofilm using a gentle blast of Airflow, which is a device used to loosen biofilm from tooth surfaces. Don’t worry; you won’t feel uncomfortable during this procedure; our Airflow device disturbs biofilm in a much less abrasive way than metal tools.
Step five – Perioflow
Depending on your biofilm, you may also need cleaning below the gumline. If this is the case, we’ll use Perioflow technology to target biofilm and bacteria in the periodontal pockets. The small, powerful device can target biofilm 6mm deep, reducing inflammation and the risk of progressive gum disease.
Step six – Piezon PS
We’ll then use the Piexon handpiece to safely and effectively break up built-up tartar and calculus deposits on your teeth. The procedure is not invasive and is pain-free!
Step seven – Quality control
Before we finish up, we’ll check if ALL the biofilm, discolouration and calculus have been removed and accurately diagnose caries.
Step eight – New recall
Once our experts are 100% happy with the biofilm procedure, we’ll schedule your next appointment with Mola Dental. We make sure you sustain your excellent GBT results by not only instructing you on how to care for your mouth at home but also by scheduling regular appointments.
Give your whole mouth a deep clean
Guided Biofilm Therapy offers a deep clean for your whole mouth, and the best part is that it’s a pain-free, minimally invasive procedure.
