With the summer holidays fast approaching, are you looking for activities and adventures in Sheffield? Well, we’ve got our top picks set out below, so you don’t have to do any searching; just take a look at our favourite places and book your summer adventures.   

 

Family days  

It’s almost here…the big school break! If you need to keep the little ones occupied, check out these family-filled days around the Sheffield area:  

  • If you’re looking for a tropical adventure, why not take the kids to Tropical Butterfly House in North Anston, Sheffield? This wildlife conservation park is home to 142 species from around the world. From amazing mammals to exotic creatures, you’re sure to have a unique, memorable experience. They also hold events all year round, so book your tickets today if you’re interested in an enchanted fairy forest walk or attending the school of witchcraft.   
  • This family-friendly museum in the heart of Sheffield is sure to be a hit with little ones interested in various weird and wonderful vehicles. The National Emergency Services Museum at West Bar, Sheffield, hides its wonders in a Tardis-like building, telling stories of the emergency services, vintage vehicles and holding interactive exhibitions. They house a collection of items, from a 47-foot lifeboat to over 600,000 other historical objects.   
  • Now this is an adventure-filled day out… Gulliver’s Valley! On Mansfield Road, Sheffield, you’ll find this theme park that is filled with activities for all the family. They have over 27 rides and 12 activities for kids big and small (they even have a mini farm!). Why not stay the day or book a lodge for a longer stay at the theme park? Don’t forget to check out their website for the events happening throughout July and August.  

  

Solo adventures  

Are you a solo adventurer? Having peaceful, mindful days on your own is vital to keeping your mental health in check; we’ve pulled together our favourite crafty and arty days out in Sheffield: 

  • Based on Surrey Street, Sheffield, Graves Art Gallery is a peaceful haven for visitors to enjoy the city’s art and a series of temporary exhibitions. The art collection opened in 1934 and prides itself on the service of knowledge and art offered. Who wouldn’t love spending the afternoon taking in the sculptures from famous artists around the globe? 
  • If you fancy getting crafty, you can attend a Jewellery Making Workshop in Kelham Island, Sheffield. Not only do you get to participate in the class with a group teacher, but you make the pieces and take them home to enjoy. 
  • If photos are more your style, why not check out a Photography Exhibition at the Site Gallery in Sheffield? The Alternate Realities exhibition showcases innovative non-fiction and immersive documentary in all forms. This exhibition explores a new way of storytelling and contains 15 unique projects for you to view. This event is free and in Sheffield until the 16th of July.   

  

Our favourite eats  

After a busy day out around Sheffield, you need fuel. That’s why we’ve done some searching (and eating) and compiled our top eats, from vegan-only food to traditional Yorkshire scran’.  

  • Are you looking for truly unique vegan food? Church – Temple of Fun Is one of the BEST vegan places you’ll eat at in Sheffield (honestly, we promise it’s unreal). Not only are you going to love the food being served, but the venue is filled with the most beautiful, unique décor along the riverside in Kelham Island; if you’re in Sheffield, this is a must-try (even if you aren’t vegan!).  
  • Are you a proper northerner’? Why not try Pieminister? From classic pies to sundaes and 2-for-1 cocktails, it’s a win-win!   
  • Can’t decide what you want to eat? Cutlery Works has something for everyone; with 13 unique food vendors, you’re sure to find something delicious.   

We couldn’t mention food without putting in our honourable mention for a spectacular drink to finish (or start) your day. Pom Bakery will serve you an eye-stopping drink! From coffee, hot chocolates and brunch treats, you need to visit this place just for the Instagrammable drinks. They have shops in Crookes and Sharrowvale, so you’ll be sure to get your energy fix.   

  

Free days out   

We LOVE a good ol’ bargain us Yorkshire folk’, so we couldn’t finish our list of the best events and places in Sheffield without mentioning our top free places to explore solo or with your family.   

  • Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Home to over 18 different gardens, why not take a picnic and spend the day in this beautiful botanical haven? The site also has events throughout the summer, from flower courses to tours around the facility.  
  • Sheffield by the Seaside is back from the 27th of July 2023 to the 29h Aug 2023. This event is FREE entry for all the family, and it has a whole load of fun activities, including fairground rides, games, a giant sandpit and visiting dinosaurs.   
  • If you want a more relaxed day, the Western Park Museum is free entry and guaranteed to keep the kids (or big kids) amused. You’ll discover everything from zoological wonders to treasures from history. You can explore life in ancient Egypt or learn more about the environment, don’t forget to top it off by visiting the café.
