What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?

Do you know what dental implants are and what different types of dental implants are available to you?

In 2012, an estimated 130,000 dental implants were placed in the UK, but that number is thought to have doubled over the past ten years.

Dental implants are playing a crucial role in modern dentistry and are becoming more and more popular with patients because they offer a long-lasting solution for missing teeth and can restore normal oral function. But what are they, and what are the different types of dental implants?

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are medical devices that are surgically placed in the jawbone to support replacement teeth. Dental implants are made up of small titanium rods that are permanently fixed in a person’s jawbone.

Not only do these prosthetic tooth roots provide a long-lasting and natural-looking option for people with missing teeth, but they also help improve oral health, restore oral function and enhance the overall quality of life for patients.

When should you get a dental implant? Our Sheffield dentists recommend getting a dental implant as soon as possible after losing or breaking your tooth; otherwise, decay can cause further dental problems for you.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The reason why dental implants are growing in popularity is because of the many benefits they offer.

One benefit of dental implants is that they are securely anchored to the jawbone, which offers superior stability and functionality compared to traditional tooth replacement options. You won’t ever experience dental implants slipping or moving while you eat or speak.

Another benefit of dental implants is that unlike other tooth replacement options, such as bridges, they don’t require the alteration or support of adjacent teeth. This helps to preserve healthy tooth structure in your mouth and promotes better oral hygiene.

Not only are dental implants better for your oral health and mouth, but they’re also better for you because they are more aesthetically pleasing compared to other tooth replacement options. Dental implants look and feel very similar to natural teeth. This helps to boost your confidence and ensures seamless integration with the surrounding teeth.

What are the different types of dental implants?

At Mola Dental, we have four different types of dental implants for our clients, including Single Replacement Tooth, Stabilisation of Dentures, Full Arch Teeth and Implant Supported Bridges.

Single Replacement Tooth

Single Replacement Tooth implants are recommended for people who have a missing tooth or if a tooth needs to be extracted. As mentioned above, a prosthetic tooth root is surgically fitted into the jawbone to provide a permanent and independent solution for replacing a missing tooth.

Stabilisation of Dentures

Stabilisation of Dentures is where underlying dental implants support a denture. The process of Stabilisation of Dentures involves using dental implants to securely anchor and support removable dentures. This provides increased stability, comfort and confidence for individuals with full or partial dentures.

For Stabilisation of Dentures, we use an acrylic material with custom teeth and a metal reinforcement. A minimum of two dental implants must be used for the lower arch, while a minimum of four is required for the upper arch.

Full Arch Teeth in a Day (All on Four)

Our All-on-Four Full Arch dental implants are ideal for patients wanting a complete smile restoration. This dental implant option involves replacing all of your top or bottom teeth with an arch of prosthetic teeth that are fitted using four titanium implants.

Our Full Arch Teeth dental implant treatment can be completed in one day while you’re fully sedated. When the temporary implants heal, which typically takes three to six months, you come back to have them replaced with your permanent artificial teeth.

Implant Supported Bridge

Another type of dental implant that we offer at Mola Dental is Implant Supported Bridges.

This type of dental implant is perfect if you have several teeth missing but no support at the back of your mouth, which makes it similar to the conventional bridge. However, with Implant Supported Bridges, the support is provided by the implants instead of natural tooth roots.
