If getting the perfect pearly whites is your goal this year, you’ve probably looked into your options. Invisalign is one way you can straighten your teeth and get the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.
But if you’re wondering whether Invisalign is right for you, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn who Invisalign is for and if the treatment can help you.
Who is Invisalign for?
Invisalign is suitable for adults and teenagers with minor orthodontic issues, such as an overcrowded mouth, underbite or overbite issue and spacing problems.
Invisalign is also a suitable treatment if you have gaps between your teeth, crooked front teeth, or rotated or slightly overlapping teeth; Invisalign can help you straighten your smile.
Can I get Invisalign if…
Essentially, these invisible braces are suitable for almost everyone. The best way to determine if Invisalign is right for you is by asking your dentist, but we’ve also put together our below guide.
Can I get Invisalign if I’m pregnant?
When you get your first Invisalign aligners, your dentist won’t use any unsafe drugs; for example, anaesthesia or other medications aren’t needed, so it’s safe for pregnant women to have Invisalign fitted and wear the invisible aligners during pregnancy.
That said, there are a few reasons Invisalign may be challenging during pregnancy, including:
- Pregnancy hormones – Some hormones can make your teeth looser or affect how your teeth respond to plaque or bacteria (which may cause swollen gums and discomfort).
- Sensitivity – While pregnant, you may experience gum bleeding and irritability, and Invisalign can make your teeth more sensitive.
- Discomfort – Patients can feel discomfort for the first few days after Invisalign treatment, but for pregnant women, this discomfort might last longer.
- Morning sickness – If you experience morning sickness during pregnancy, you may need to remove your aligners more often.
As Invisalign is an elective treatment, we advise you to wait to start it until after your pregnancy has ended. If you are mid-way through your pregnancy, it’s safe to continue as long as you wear your aligners and maintain optimum oral hygiene.
Can I get Invisalign if I have wisdom teeth?
It depends on your individual case, but most people with wisdom teeth can have Invisalign treatment. Those with asymptomatic wisdom teeth (wisdom teeth that don’t cause any problems) can have Invisalign treatment without any issues.
Impacted wisdom teeth may cause some issues with Invisalign, but your dentist will examine your mouth and determine if your wisdom teeth could cause problems during Invisalign treatment.
Your dentist may suggest removing your wisdom teeth if they believe the teeth could cause you pain, get in the way of fitting the Invisalign aligners, or the wisdom teeth are damaging the surrounding teeth.
Can I get Invisalign if I have gum disease?
If your gums are receding or your dentist has diagnosed gum disease, you cannot have Invisalign treatment.
You need to seek gum recession or gum disease treatment before you can have Invisalign treatment. Invisalign permanently changes the structure of your gums and might damage them further if you have existing gum problems.
Talk to your dentist about treating your gum disease and ask about Invisalign treatment; your dentist should be able to advise you on how to deal with both and answer any questions you have.
Can I get Invisalign if I have fillings?
As long as your teeth are healthy and free from diseases, you can have Invisalign treatment; even if you have fillings, crowns or veneers, your dentist can fit Invisalign aligners and start your treatment.
If you’re concerned about your fillings and Invisalign treatment, talk to your dentist, who will be able to offer advice and answer any questions you have.
Can I get Invisalign if I’m elderly?
Older adults can get Invisalign treatment; there is no upper age limit. Whether in your 60s or 70s, you can get Invisalign if you still have most of your natural teeth and good oral health.
In fact, Invisalign is great for elderly people because the treatment straightens your teeth, which makes it easier for you to clean and maintain them.
